Halfway through the morning, Françoise asked her if she had seen the funeral on television.

‘Yes, I did.’

‘I cried for six hours,’ she boasted. ‘Six whole hours. The awfulness of what had happened just suddenly hit me – I was a wreck thinking about that poor princess.’ She narrowed her eyes. ‘How many hours did you cry for?’

‘About one, I would guess. Only while it was on TV. Then I stopped.’

‘Just one hour?’ Françoise looked at her with contempt, and shook her head. ‘Just one hour of tears for a young life so cruelly snuffed out?’

‘Yes, just the one.’

Françoise tutted, and went back to her work.
